Después de ganar al Partizan de Belgrado 5
a 1 el pasado jueves en uno de los partidos de la fase de grupos de la Europa
League, el New York Times le ha dedicado un artículo entero al conjunto del
País Basco. Con el título "Using Only Local Talent, Athletic Bilbao Goes a
Long Way", el diario neoyorquino repasa la trayectoria y actualidad de un
club marcado por su singularidad de jugar sólo con jugadores pertenecientes al
País Basco.
“Bayern
Munich wants to be known in Asia and Australia. Barcelona wants to be known in
the Middle East. Everyone wants to be known in Africa and the United States.
Here though,
in the Basque Country of northern Spain, there is a club — a team with eight
Spanish league titles, 23 domestic cup titles, frequent appearances in the
continental competitions and the distinction of never having been relegated
from the first division — with comparatively little interest in getting bigger.”
El New York Times hace hincapié en el
principal hecho distintivo del conjunto bilbaíno, su política de jugadores, y
destaca que a diferencia de otros clubes que pagan cantidades millonarias por
fichar jugadores, el Athletic Club sobrevive y compite en el fútbol de máximo
nivel solamente con jugadores vascos.
“While teams
like Manchester United and Real Madrid and Paris St.-Germain scour the globe
for players and pay millions to import the game’s biggest stars, Athletic’s
player policy has been — for more than a century — remarkably simple: If you
are not from here, you cannot play here.”
También se repasa la evolución que esta
política ha experimentado en las últimas décadas y cómo se ha flexibilizado con
el tiempo, por ello jugadores como Laporte, quién juega con la Selección
Francesa, o Williams, de madre Ganiana y padre Libanés, juegan en el primer
equipo.
“Urrutia,
the club president, said the policy had the flexibility to grow with the times.
For example, he said, immigrants or refugees who come to Bilbao with young
children, or who later have children, can enroll them in Athletic’s academy.
Race is not a restriction either, Urrutia said: Iñaki Williams, whose mother is
Ghanaian and whose father is Liberian, was born in Bilbao, plays for Athletic
and scored two goals on Thursday.”
